Spring brings about the connotations of rebirth. Building upon the California Art Club’s long history promoting traditional art forms, we are pleased to present The Signs of Spring, the thirteenth installment of the quarterly Excellence in Traditional Fine Art Competition!
Our gratitude goes to Mary Platt, Director of the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University, for being the guest judge and curating these images for this virtual exhibition, showcasing the most exemplary submissions as well as the prize-winning works.
Artwork is available for purchase unless listed as NFS. If you are interested in acquiring a work, please submit a purchase inquiry. In addition, we suggest consulting our Terms of Sale.
Congratulations to the Winners!

Ricky Hill
Kestrel in Window
Colored pencil on Strathmore paper, 14" x 11"
Such a masterful display of the art of the colored pencil – this realistic rendering of architectural detail and noble bird caught my eye. Everything about it works – the composition, the textures, the light and shadow.

Second Place Winner | $500
Robin Angelides
First Day of Spring
Soft pastel on paper, 12" x 12"
Impressionistic strokes of the pastels and ethereal colors all work together to create a memorable mood, with purples and greens evoking a mystical aura. The moon above adds its own magical touch.

Third Place Winner | $250
Paige Bradley
Melancholia
Bronze, 30.5" x 14"
Even a nice spring day can cause some to experience melancholy. This expressive and mysterious figure invites us to ponder: why is she sad? Are the butterflies there to help and uplift her?

Honorable Mention | $75
Deborah Day
Dulci Among Flowers
Oil on canvas, 22" x 28"
Horses aren’t easy to depict, and to truly capture a horse’s personality takes great skill and understanding. In this virtuoso oil, Dulci has a kind eye and looks like an equine I’d like to know.
