Leo Carrillo Ranch Paint/Sculpt Out
Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
FreeThe San Diego Chapter welcomes you to paint at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park on October 22, 2022.
Leo Carrillo Ranch is a Spanish-style rancho located in Carlsbad. When visiting “Carlsbad’s Sleeping Beauty”, you can explore 27 acres worth of trails, buildings, and stables. This location offers beautiful scenery, wandering peacocks, and intricate Spanish inspired arches and architecture.
Leo Carrillo and The Rancho
Hollywood Actor Leo Carrillo originally built the Leo Carrillo Ranch between the years 1937 and 1940 as a retreat for himself and his friends. Leo was often described as a positive role model and preservationist who sought to celebrate the early Spanish influence in California. The numerous adobe and wood buildings along with the working ranch served as a tribute to Old California culture.
The Leo Carrillo Rancho was abandoned around 1960, later being discovered in 1985 in an undeveloped valley of Carlsbad. A group of wandering citizens asked to view the grounds, which sparked interest in the abandoned rancho. In 1990, Carlsbad resident Alan Kindle created a nonprofit educational corporation called Friends of Carrillo Ranch in an effort to help develop the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. Today, the Friends of Carrillo Ranch is actively involved in educational programs, historic structure restoration, and project funding.
