The Sensations of Summer features works depicting anything from children with the impish joy of chasing through the sprinkler, to still life’s detailing sweet, ripe fruits or various summer crops, to waves hitting the shore, crowded beach scenes, to blooms of wildflowers and to figures racing to eat ice cream cones before it starts to melt around their fingers, to national parks.
We extend our thanks to Katie Dolgov, Director of Exhibitions and Collections at Oceanside Museum of Art, for serving as the guest judge and curating these images for this virtual exhibition. Her keen eye highlight the most exceptional submissions, including the prize-winning works.

My wife, Betty, and I have traveled to red rock country many times and Arches National Park in Utah was one of our favorites! The sensation of summer played a part in creating this bold and colorful watercolor painting! After the rains (even in the summer) the red rocks glow with deep reds and the arches are amazing for their unique natural and massive rock formations. Hiking around them was a special thrill! How small we seemed to be in comparison to their immense size and soaring pinnacles! We were especially amazed and inspired of God’s handiwork!
I would often sing the song You are my Sunshine to my daughter when she was a little girl. Late August, in the dog days of summer, I decided to live sculpt her during a demonstration with everyone watching. We were heading to the beach after, so she already had on a floppy hat and bathing suit. I originally felt like the beach ball represented the child spirit and playfulness found in those short weeks at the end of summer. Now I see this sculpture in a more profound light; she is the young generation, holding the Earth with love and protection. Either way, our children, radiate warmth and energy and are our sunshine.
Invasive thistles claim their spots amidst winter wheat growing in Yolo County, California. Notorious for its scorching summer heat, the Sacramento Valley's undulating farmlands also yield a serenity, a sense of place — of home — with its simple, dry beauty.
Sometimes I know a painting when I see it. Such was the case with this cute salmon colored lifeguard shack I encountered on a deserted Kauai beach. The salmon paint job was virtually glowing in the morning sunlight, and the little building created a fun cast shadow on the sand. The lifeguard was at his post looking out on the bay, his surfboard ready at the water’s edge. But the water was too flat to entice surfers so there sat the would be hero all alone in his tower. Although this is a watercolor, it was not painted with watercolor brushes. I use a technique I call “Poured Watercolors” because I literally pour liquid watercolors from cups onto wet watercolor paper. I find that I can achieve glowing colors by pouring layers of transparent paint on the paper, usually just three colors. This painting has about twenty layers. My “drawing tool” is masking fluid applied with a palette knife which I use to create shapes and protect completed poured areas. My watercolor brushes lay idle throughout the process until the very end when I used a small liner brush for the tiniest of details and to sign my name.

Eye See You

The painting Eye See You depicts a little girl wearing her grandmother's oversized sunglasses surrounded by flowers in the style of a Chinese woodblock.The incorporation of the wood grain into the watery background gives the painting a dreamlike quality, as if the scene is part of a fleeting memory. Overall, Eye See You is a heartwarming and whimsical depiction of the bond between generations, reminding us of the simple joys of spending time with loved ones.

It is always exciting to see the Carlsbad flower fields in bloom. Painting all the luscious color early in the morning with the contrasting workman is very inspiring.
