California Dreaming, presented in conjunction with Curated by the Sea, showcases the quintessential land and lifestyle of the Golden State and features works from members of the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Chapters.
There are two Public Receptions for this exhibition taking place at Curated by the Sea on, Friday, February 3, and Friday, March 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Just south of Pigeon Point Lighthouse is a staircase that leads down to this cove. Part of the year it is filled with seals but this day I had it all to myself. I did a plein air study for this piece gorgeous stretch of coastline in California.
This was painted en plein air in September 2022 in the Sunset District of San Francisco. It was such a beautiful day, and the lady who owned the camper was thrilled I saw the beauty she knew was there all along. She kept going into the green house to bring out another family member to watch me paint. As people passed me on the sidewalk, they all seemed to know the Red Camper lady. It was such a cool community vibe.
This painting was inspired by several plein air studies at this location, north of Santa Cruz. A coastline of gold eroded sandstone is complementary to the blues of the ocean and sky. The coves along the pacific coast carry the eye in a serpentine pattern where the land and sea connect. I enjoy the effect of this large painting. I feel I can walk into the scene, hear the waves, and feel the sand squish under my toes.
The Golden Gate Bridge Stands reliably tall and steadfast over powerful turbulent waves in the bay. The immediately striking contrast of the two subjects is the focus of my painting.
Inspired by the sky glider ride in Boardwalk, Santa Cruz. It brings up all good memories being with families. I pair palette knives with brushes to create abstract marks and movement within my representational landscape. I hope viewers will look at my images from different distances. They will find abstract marks at short range, but an entire, resolved scene, from further away
Oceans, lakes, rivers, they are a playful place, a healing place.
Each time someone pulls away from the shoreline on a boat, an adventure begins.
Color makes your eyes dance, twinkle with anticipation of the painting to come.
There’s an interplay of color that can only be witnessed with the eye in the environment.
The colorful buoys reflecting in the water. The fleeting play of light on the surface. Boats of different function and character, all with their own history.
Elements I love, together, to create Oceanside Harbor.
These are two sea otters I observed while kayaking in Monterey Bay. They seemed to have a connection with each other in the kelp bed, which is why I titled this Sea Buddies.
It is an overcast, grey day at Moonstone Beach in Cambria CA. The figures amble slowly along the water’s edge as they look for the the elusive bright spot of rough-tumbled chalcedony that gives the beach its name. In the distance, the fog is lifting. Soon the grey skies will give way to blue overhead, making the elusive stones even harder to spot.
On one of my early morning hikes at Point Lobos State Park I looked up to see the light with the mist in the air. The light was a warm glow, it softened the background and silhouetted the cool blue-grey cypress trees in the foreground. I saw a painting
(Cypress Morning Glow). After retuning to my studio I knew the painting needed to be large enough to capture the scale of the cypress trees that twist in the wind and salty air. There is such beauty all around us at Point Lobos State Park I see paintings everywhere I look.
