Media Advisory AWARD-WINNING ARTIST MIAN SITU TO LEAD PAINTING DEMONSTRATION
Part of the California Art Academy and Museum's Master
Artist Workshop Series,
As a special Valentine's Day treat for artists and art lovers, award-winning Chinese-American artist Mian Situ will lead a half-day demonstration and lecture on traditional fine art painting at the Pacific Asia Museum. The workshop is part of an ongoing series of the California Art Academy and Museum (CAAM) for amateur, intermediate and professional artists interested in learning fine art concepts and techniques from nationally recognized artists. Unlike other CAAM programs, which are taught over five days, this event is a half-day demonstration/lecture being held on a Saturday, which provides aspiring artists with a unique opportunity to learn from a well-respected California artist without having to devote a week for study. WHO: Mian Situ is a sought-after artist who likes to tell stories in his paintings, many of which depict life in his native China. During his education in China, he learned Western oil painting techniques that were being fostered in the People's Republic during the Cultural Revolution. When he immigrated to North America, he brought with him a wealth of talents that included plein-air landscape painting and powerful academic realism, notably in figural work. From Situ's first appearance on the American art scene, his paintings have been consistent award winners, starting with the 1995 $10,000 Best of Show at the Oil Painters of America Annual, to the 2003 Masters of Western Art, Autry Museum, where he received the Thomas Moran Memorial for artistic merit. WHERE: Pacific Asia Museum WHEN: Saturday, February 14, 2004, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. COST: $125.00; $100.00 for museum and CAC members PUBLIC INFORMATION: For more information and reservations, call
