CALIFORNIA ART CLUB KICKS OFF 2004 WITH JANUARY EVENTS
FOR TWO POPULAR ONGOING PROGRAMS

Jean Stern, Executive Director of The Irvine Museum, to Discuss History of California Art
at the Membership Meeting, and the Master Artist Workshop Series Continues
with Glenn Vilppu Teaching Time-Honored Drawing Techniques

PASADENA, Calif. - The California Art Club will kick off the New Year with January events for two of its popular ongoing programs - its art lecture series on topics of interest to both artists and collectors and the Master Artist Workshops for artists of all levels who want to hone their artistic skills with the guidance of nationally recognized artists.
On Sunday, January 11, the Club will present an "Overview of California Art," a timely lecture that addresses the growing international interest and appreciation in California art. Jean Stern, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum, will lead the discussion, spotlighting the work of early California Impressionists, many of whom were founders of the California Art Club. Mr. Stern curated the first-ever international exhibition of California Impressionist paintings to tour Europe, which premiered in Paris in 2002.
The lecture will be held in the Wells Fargo Theater of the Autry Museum of Western Heritage beginning at 1:30 p.m. The admission is $10.00 per person, and $5.00 for members of the Club and the Autry Museum.
On Monday, January 12, the Master Artist Workshop Series continues with a five-day workshop on drawing, lead by Glenn Vilppu, who currently is an instructor at Walt Disney Feature Animation, the American Animation Institute and the UCLA Masters in Animation Program.
With sessions held each day that week from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at various studios in the Pasadena area, the workshop will provide an opportunity for 16 students to work side-by-side with Vilppu and learn time-honored concepts on drawing used by such greats as Michelangelo and Rembrandt. The cost of the workshop is $575.00 and includes a Welcome Breakfast with California Art Club president, Peter Adams, and the Club's executive director, Elaine Adams, as well as an informal dinner/critique session at the conclusion of the workshop.
The Master Artist Workshop Series is offered through California Art Academy and Museum, which was founded by the Club in 1997 to provide training in traditional fine arts for amateur, intermediate and professional artists. Other workshops slated for 2004 include "Outdoors to In-Studio" with Junn Roca, "Urban Landscapes" with Ken Auster and "Plein Air Landscapes in Oil" with Peter Adams.
