CALIFORNIA ART CLUB AWARDS TWO GOLD MEDALS FOR 'BEST OF SHOW'
AT OPENING OF THE 93rd ANNUAL GOLD MEDAL JURIED EXHIBITION

Painter Steve Huston and Sculptor George Carlson Receive Top Honors
for Original Art Showcased in this Prestigious Art Event

PASADENA, Calif. - Artists Steve Huston and George Carlson received "Best of Show" honors at the California Art Club's 93rd Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Peter Adams, president of the California Art Club, and Donald Hildreth, chair of the Gold Medal Exhibition, announced the winners before the more than 400 in attendance at the exhibition's gala opening reception on Saturday, October 11.
Huston, a painter from Monrovia, Calif., and Carlson, a sculptor who is one of the club's out-of-state members and resides in Harrison, Idaho, were selected to be honored with Gold Medals by their peers, the 152 artists whose artwork comprises this extensive annual exhibition, which has gained the reputation of being one of the most prestigious in the United States by featuring the highest quality of traditional fine art paintings and sculptures.
The painting by Huston, a long-time member of the club, was created in oil on panel and entitled "Nude with Vase. " Carlson's bronze sculpture, which measures 29 inches tall, is "Light of Dawn."
The Gold Medal Exhibition will continue through Sunday, November 2, 2003. During the three-week exhibition, artists will lead two demonstrations on fine art techniques. On Saturday, October 18, Glen Eisner will present the principles of sculpting, and on Saturday, November 1, Sunny Apinchapong-Yang will discuss portraiture. Both demonstrations will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and require an additional ticket that costs $10.00 per event. Tickets are available through the museum.
All of the works in this juried exhibition are available for sale, and many are featured in the 176-page full-color exhibition catalogue that documents the careers of the participating artists. The catalogue, available through the museum for $45.00, features an essay by Dr. Albert Boime of the U.C.L.A. Department of Art History on "California Orientalism," a subject that has never before been published. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of both artwork and the catalogue will benefit the California Art Club and the Museum.
The Pasadena Museum of California Art is located at 490 E. Union St. in Pasadena, Calif. Its hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with extended evening hours on Friday until 8 p.m. The telephone number is 626-568-3665.
