For more than a century, Californias premier fine artists have
captured on canvas the spectacular views and stunning natural environment
of the Arroyo Seco documenting why this historic area has earned
the title "Most Celebrated Canyon in Southern California."
Today the City of Pasadena is considering an exciting proposal that
celebrates the Arroyos rich past and natural treasures
and preserves this legacy for future generations. The proposal calls
for the creation of the Arroyo Center for Art and the Environment
at Desiderio Army Reserve Center, located beneath the majestic and historic
Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena.
This proposed project is being jointly presented by two historic Pasadena-based
organizations the Arroyo Seco Foundation and the California
Art Club, both of which have a 100-year tradition of enhancing and
elevating the awareness of Pasadenas beloved Arroyo Seco. This
Center would house a small art museum, library and instructive classes
dedicated to California Impressionism and its continuation, and an Arroyo
Seco nature center. The 5.1 acre grounds will be re-landscaped to beautify
the sites natural Arroyo setting with no additional buildings.
The proposers plan to work closely with the community and neighborhood
associations to create the most aesthetic environment for the area with
low traffic impact.

The California Art Clubs first meeting was held in the Arroyo
Seco at the art studio of Franz Bischoff in 1909. Moreover, the lower
Arroyo Seco was originally settled in 1910 by California Impressionists
(Plein Air Painters), as well as members of the Craftsman Aesthetic
Movement. One-hundred years later, artists continue to gravitate to
this area and continue to find inspiration in the beauty and nature
of the Arroyo Seco. It seems right to have an institution dedicated
to these important artists in the area where they worked and lived.
The Arroyo Center for Art and the Environment is about beauty, land
preservation, art, history, heritage and establishing a Pasadena legacy.
